Saving Energy and Costs with High Quality, Clean Oil
The saying „One cannot see the wood for the trees” often rings true. In order to save cost and energy every possible solution is explored. Many of these measures not only make machines more expensive but also more sensitive and therefore more susceptible to the need for repairs. Only in the rarest of cases is attention paid to the enormous potential savings that can be achieved by making one small change – the oil!
In simple terms, all working machines need lubricating and hydraulic fluids in order to work. The main functions of the oils are the minimisation of friction (lubrication), transmission of power (hydraulic) and cooling. If one were to assume that the lubricating and hydraulic fluids used here will not offer potential for savings, then in reverse this would imply that all oils are practically the same. This is definitely not the case. It is possible to break down the “oil science” into a simple, comprehensible sentence: “Better oils offer better protection (better lubrication) and can be used longer.” This equates to cost reduction and the saving of energy (fuel).
The lower the friction resistance the less energy is needed in order to overcome it. This is an irrevocable technical fact. KLEENOIL PANOLIN technicians have been looking into this, and in practical comparisons and research the following astonishing results have been observed:
1. Intercomparisons of a construction equipment manufacturer showed that construction machinery loses up to 20% of performance simply due to excessive contamination in the hydraulic oil. 20% corresponds to one working day per week. This figure represents, in the extreme case, “empty” work – time, cost and energy is expended without receiving the expected performance.
2. In other experiments it has been proven that the use of fully synthetic HV oils could save 6 – almost 14% of energy/fuel.
3. For combustion engines it is obvious that high quality light running oil (especially if clean) can cause up to 5% of fuel saving due to general reduction of friction and a better cold start performance.
| Consumption of lubricants and energy Example: a mobile hydraulic work unit
| |||
Admissible quality: | VERSUS | Best (admissible) quality:
| Saving potential |
Motor: 15W/40 | Motor: 5W/30 | 3%
Hydraulic: | Hydraulic: | 6%
Standard filtration | Microfiltration hydraulic & motor | 5%
= energy consumption referential value 100% | = energy consumption with the best quality 86% | 14%*
*realistic middle value for the same operating conditions
All in all this does not mean anything other than that that with a high-quality and especially clean lubricating and hydraulic fluid it is possible to save considerable amounts of energy/fuel. At the same time every improvement of the oil cleanliness results in a reduction of malfunctions, wear and break-downs. This also achieves an extended useful life of the machines. Depending on the machine and application it is therefore possible to reduce the machine maintenance cost by half.
Case Study: Earthmoving equipment fitted with 3x 24V KLEENOIL By-pass fine filter rigs and 1x KLEENOIL By-pass fine filter unit for filtration of all hydraulic and gear oils
One possible reason for neglecting the aforementioned saving potentials could be the fact that both during the purchase of new equipment and their entire useful life the costs for the oil are in most cases below 1%. This “insignificance” often leads to oil not receiving the attention it deserves.
Based on the knowledge gained, KLEENOIL PANOLIN AG increasingly offers fully synthetic and environmentally considerate PANOLIN oils as well as KLEENOIL offline Microfiltration to equipment users and manufacturers. These products, technological solutions and application concepts are available for hydraulic systems, motor and gear-boxes. The total expenses are generally below / at 1% of the machine operating costs. The benefits are as a general rule energy saving opportunities of considerably >10% as well as a significant reduction of malfunctions, wear and break-downs.
